Aran Sweater Design Errata

If you have a copy from the first or second printings, please note the following corrections:

  • On page 152 under the Set-In Sleeve Pullover Project, the instructions for the pattern set-up row state to work the "4 sts of chart/patt B." That is incorrect. Chart/patt B has 5 stitches, not 4, so the instructions for the Back and Front should read as follows (corrected numbers are in bold type):

Back: Using smaller needles, cast on 134 (144, 154, 164, 174) sts. Work 6 rows Garter Stitch (knit every row), end having worked a RS row.

Change to larger needles and est patt as foll: 11 (16, 21, 26, 31) sts Sand Stitch, p1, 7 sts chart/patt A, 5 sts chart/patt B, 16 sts chart/patt C, 5 sts chart/patt B, 7 sts chart/patt A, 30 sts chart/patt D, 7 sts chart/patt A, 5 sts chart/patt B, 16 sts chart/patt C, 5 sts chart/patt B, 7 sts chart/patt A, p1, 11 (16, 21, 26, 31) sts Sand Stitch.

Cont in patt as est until piece measures 17 ¾ (17 ¼, 19, 18 ½, 18)" from cast-on edge.

Shape armholes: Bind off 4 (6, 8, 10, 12) sts at beg of next two rows, then one st at beg of next 8 (12, 16, 16, 16) rows—118 (120, 122, 128, 134) sts. Cont in patt as est until Back measures approx 7 (7½, 8, 8½, 9)" from beg of armhole shaping, ending with Row 9 of chart/patt D. Bind off 12 (12, 12, 12, 13) sts at beg of next four rows. Bind off rem 70 (72, 74, 80, 82) sts or place on holder.

Front: Work as for Back until Front measures approx 4 (4 ½, 5, 5 ½, 6)" from beg of armhole shaping, ending with Row 13 of chart/patt D. Work across 47 (48, 49, 51, 54) sts, bind off or place center 24 (24, 24, 26, 26) sts on holder for base of neck opening, then work across rem 47 (48, 49, 51, 54) sts. Working each side separately, bind off one st at neck edge every other row 5 (5, 5, 7, 7) times. Cont in patt as est until Front measures same as Back from beg of armhole shaping. Shape shoulders same as Back.

  • On page 163, row 7 of the chart, four stitches in from the right side of the chart should be a symbol for a knit stitch, not a purl. The written instructions are correct.

Cables, Volume 1: The Basics Errata

  • On page 46, the swatch does not match the chart. The swatch has two knitted columns separated by one purl stitch; the chart and description indicate that they are separated by two purl stitches.

  • On page 114, the chart is correct, but the instructions for row 12 are not. They should read: "P1, (3/1 RPC, p2 3/1 LPC) twice, p1." The RPC and LPC are backwards.

  • The chart on page 184 is correct, but the instructions in row 36 of the accompanying pattern on page 185 are not. Row 36 should read: "P9, 3/1/3 LC, p9."

Son of Aran Pattern (Spring 2001)
When picking up for the back, please note that the stitch counts for all sizes are off by two stitches. There are two ways to rectify this: either cast on two additional stitches for the back neck (e.g., cast on 50, 50, 58, 66, and 66 sts for each size) or pick up an additional stitch in each saddle (e.g., 39, 43, 45, 45, 45).

Tulips Lace Vest Pattern (Summer 2001)
Where it says "Divide for armholes" it should read "Work across 63 (66, 71, 73, 76, 79) sts, bind off next 22 (30, 36, 46, 52, 58) sts, work across 112 (120, 128, 134, 146, 158) sts, bind off 22 (30, 36, 46, 52, 58) sts, work across rem 63 (66, 71, 73, 76, 79) sts.

I left out the specific instructions to bind off the same number of stitches the second time as you do the first time and to work the same number of stitches across the second half of the front as you did the first half.

Cross-Country Aran (Summer 2001)
I'm not at all sure where my head was on the day I wrote this pattern. Here are the corrections:
1. There are 34 stitches in each saddle. Where the instructions tell you to pick up stitches for the sleeve and knit across the 30 saddle stitches, substitute "34" for "30".
2. Under "Sleeves," the number for the first set of picked-up stitches for size M should be 42, not 46.
3. The total number of picked-up stitches for the sleeve (including the correct number of saddle stitches) should be (117, 117, 125, 129).
4. The sleeve decreases should read "work a double decrease at this seam stitch every 4th round (18, 19, 20, 23) times, then every 6th round 4 (4, 3, 0) times.

Aran Go Round (Winter 2001)
Round 3 is incorrect on both the chart and the written instructions. It should read:
*P6, k1, [knit into the back, then front, of next st and drop from LH needle; insert tip of LH needle behind vertical strand between the two sts just worked, and knit into it], k1, p7; rep from * around.
On Round 3 of the chart, there should be six purl sts (reading from right to left), followed by a black box, a vertical line, the symbol for the double increase, another vertical line, a black box, then seven purl sts.

Cables 101 Vest (Spring 2002)
The "Length to Underarm" measurement should read: 12 (13, 14)"

Under Back, the Armhole Shaping should read: Bind off 4 (8, 12) sts at beg of next two rows, then 1 st at beg of next 10 rows (130) sts. Work even until armhole measures 8 1/2".

Under Back, the Shoulder Shaping should read: Bind of 15 sts at beg of next six rows. Bind off rem 40 sts.

Under the section for V-neck and armhole shaping on the fronts, it should read: Maintaining cable patterns, bind off one st at neck edge every other row 16 times. AT SAME TIME, when piece measures 12 (13, 14)" from cast-on row, bind off 4 (8, 12) sts at armhole edge, then one st each armhole edge 5 times. Work even until armhole measures 8 1/2". Shape shoulders same as back.

Irish Wave and Knot Afghan Square (Spring 2002)
The lines are missing from the chart. There should be two vertical lines, one to the left of the second stitch from the right of the chart, and one to the left of the sixteenth stitch from the right of the chart.

Briar Rose Square (Summer 2002)
The rows are mis-numbered on this square. The even-numbered rows are worked on the RS, and should appear on the right-hand side of the chart. The odd-numbered rows are WS rows, and should appear on the left-hand side of the chart.

Moss Trellis Aran (Fall 2002)
The chart for the Right Cross cable is correct, but the first row directions are backwards. They should read: K1, p2, k1.

When picking up for the fronts, the numbers are off by two stitches. The instructions for the Left Front should read, " . . . pick up 51 (55, 59, 63, 67) sts in cast-on edge of Back." The pattern set-up instructions should read, "Work 11 (15, 19, 23, 27) sts Interrupted Rib, k2, 7 sts chart A . . . etc." The two knit sts in between the Interrupted Rib and the first chart are missing in the original instructions. Reverse the instructions for the Right Front.

Pines and Bells Christmas Stocking (Fall 2002)
When working the heel of the stocking, you should be working on needle #1, *not* needle #2.
When working the gusset of the Pines and Bells Christmas Stocking, the number of stitches on needle #1 should be 58, not 59.

Aran Wannabee and Aran Wanabee Too (Winter 2002) The explanation for 2/1 RPC and 2/1 LPC are missing from the key. They are defined as follows:

2/1 LPC (2/1 Left Purl Cross): Slip next 2 sts to cable needle and hold at front of work, p1, then k2 from cable needle

2/1 RPC (2/1 Right Purl Cross): Slip next 2 sts to cable needle and hold at back of work, k2, then p1 from cable needle

Escher Cable Vest (Spring 2003)
I indicated that one multiple of the stitch pattern should measure 2 5/8" when in reality, it should measure 4". The width from diamond point to diamond point measures about 2 5/8" and I planned originally that it would be the stitch multiple. I changed the stitch multiple, to that which appears in the chart, but forgot to change the measurement.

Garland with Bobbles Afghan Square (Spring 2003)
The bobble instructions are missing. They should read: [K1, yo, k1, yo, k1] into next stitch, turn; p5, turn; k2tog, k1, SSK, turn; p3, turn; slip 2—k1—p2sso. Bobble completed.

Bonnie's Bags (Summer 2003)
Chart B is correct, but the written instructions are not. They should read:
Row 1 and all WS rows: [P2, k2] five times, p2
Row 2: [K2, p2] five times, k2
Row 4: correct as written
Row 6: [K2, p2] five times, k2
Row 8: correct as written

Rick's Aran (Fall 2003)
Under Saddles, the instructions stae to use smaller needles. This is incorrect. The saddles should be knit using the larger sized needles. The smaller sized needles are used on the ribbing sections only.

Spring Forward Cardigan (Spring 2004)
This isn't so much a correction as a clarification. In the section of the pattern under Shape Neck, it reads "Cast on one st at neck edge 28 times, working cast on stitches . . . " It isn't clear whether you should cast on one additional stitch on every row or every other row. You should cast on an additional stitch every row; or, if it's easier to think of it this way, cast on 2 stitches at the neck edge every other row 14 times. The goal is to add 28 stitches for that half of the V-neck opening.

Mo's Reading Shawl (Spring 2004)
Under the Abbreviations section, note that the instructions for working the 3/3 LC are incomplete. They should read: Slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold at front of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle.

RickRack Tee (Summer 2004)
Under the Materials section, I list the yardage for the Cascade Pima Silk as 109 yards per 100g skein. It should be 109 yards per 50g skein. If you're thinking about substituting yarns, I would call this more of a DK weight yarn than a sport weight yarn (my apologies for the confusion).

Cozy Shawl Collar Aran (Winter 2004)
The description for the 2/4 LPC cable should read: "Slip next 2 sts to cable needle and hold at front of work" (not back of work).

The first row of Chart B should show three purls, six knits, and three purls, and Row 1 of the Pattern for Chart B should read K3, p6, k3.

Cable O's Vest (Spring 2005)
Under the Shape Shoulders section of the Back, the instructions should read: "Bind off 11 (14, 16, 16) sts at beg of next 4 rows."

Imitation Crochet Shawl (Summer 2005)
The Mesh Stitch chart is correct, but the instructions for Row 1 should read "K1, yo, *SSK, k2tog, [yo twice]; rep from * to last five sts, end SSK, k2tog, yo, k1.

Sand and Ropes Gansey (Spring 2006)
Rows 2, 4 and 6 of the written instructions do not match the chart. The written instructions should read "Rows 2, 4, and 6: P6, *k7, p6; rep from *.

Emmalee's Aran (Fall 2006)
The yarn amounts are incorrect. They should be 900 (1050, 1200, 1350) yards.

Follow-The-Leader Aran (Fall 2006)
The gauge given is incorrect. It should read:

22 sts and 28 rows = 4" / 10 cm over Moss Stitch on US size 5 needles.

Kettle-Dyed Neck Scarf (Fall 2006)
The chart as given is incorrect. A PDF of the correct chart (with written instructions added) can be found here.

Park Avenue Aran (Winter 2007)

The sleeve lengths as given in the pattern are not quite correct. Under Sleeves, the pattern should read: Cont in patt as est until sleeve measures 17 (16, 15, 14)" from cast-on edge, then work an additional 2 (2, 4, 5½)". Bind off. The additional lengths to account for the sleeve inset were not included in the pattern. The schematic should show a measurement where the underarm stitches are bound off and that measurement should be 2 (2, 4, 5½)" to match that of the sleeve.

Mystery Afghan (Winter 2007)

When I started working on this project. I swatched with the Naturally Yarn 10-ply (worsted weight). I decided it was too light for the afghan I was planning (I wanted something substantial), so I switched to the 14-ply version. However, I forgot to change the needle size and gauge in the pattern. If you manage to get gauge on the needles specified with the 14-ply yarn, I salute you!

  • If you want to make the afghan using the 10-ply yarn, use the needle size specified in the pattern (US #8, 5 mm) and match the gauge given (20 sts and 24 rows per 4"/10 cm). Your afghan will come out a bit lighter and narrower than the heavier version.

  • If you want to use the 14-ply yarn (that's what I am using), the needle size should be US #9 (5.5 mm) and the gauge should be 16 sts and 20 rows per 4" (10 cm).

My apologies for the confusion. I do like the yarn, in both weights, but I want a thick, cushy afghan; hence, the 14-ply.

Foothill Road Aran (Winter 2008)

Chart and pattern B as presented are incorrect. The crossings in rows 8, 12 and 16 are transposed. The pattern should read:

Rows 8, 12 and 16: P2, 2/2 LC, 2/2 RC, p2

and the positions of the right and left crosses in those row on the chart should be reversed.

Shifting Sands Afghan (Summer 2010)

Download the errata page here.

Taste of Aran Afghan Compilation (first edition)

The Palms Square
The chart is correct, but in the Key to Charts the symbol for the twisted knit stitches in each palm says only "knit through back of loop." It should say, "Knit through back of loop on RS, purl through back of loop on WS."

Spiderweb Cable
The instructions say to work rows 1-30 of the chart twice. They should say "work rows 1-28 once, then rows 1-30 once." Also, on rows 7 and 8 some of the squares in the chart indicating seed stitch are incorrect. Work seed stitch in pattern as established.

Briar Rose Square
The rows are mis-numbered on this square. The even-numbered rows are worked on the RS, and should appear on the right-hand side of the chart. The odd-numbered rows are WS rows, and should appear on the left-hand side of the chart.

Rice Stitch Diamond Square
Row 10: 19 sts in from the right side of chart, the chart indicates knit, purl, purl; should be purl, purl, knit
Row 14: 19 sts in from the right side of chart, the chart indicates knit; should be purl
Row 28: 12 sts in from right side of chart, the chart indicates knit, purl, purl; be purl, purl, knit

Key to Charts
The description for LT (Left Twist) should read: Knit into the back of the second st on LH needle, then first st, then drop both from LH needle.
